Someone just mailed me to ask how I play "Talk To Your Daughter". I often get mails asking questions about my songs or the songs I cover, my guitars and what strings I use, etc. In this case, I mailed him back the relevant info and was just about finished with it when I thought - hey, maybe I should share this on the website via the blog. So, here is the info for those of you who might be interested.
What might be throwing you off is the fact that it's in open G. The good news is - that makes it really easy to play, especially for slide. If you don't know how to re-tune your guitar to open G, it's (from heavy E to light E)
* tune the bottom E (heavy E) down to D
* tune A down to G
* leave D as it is
* leave G as it is
* leave B as it is
* tune the top (light) E down to D
You'll now notice if you strum the guitar without placing any fingers on the fretboard that you have a G chord. Now all you have to do is move up 5 frets and just lay your first finger across all the strings and that's your C, up two more frets and you have your D.
BTW, I should mention here that you don't actually hit the bottom E at all (which is why Keith Richards takes it off and only plays on 5 strings).
That little opening riff is just picking the A (now G) string and the D string (on the 2nd & 3rd fret). The same thing goes for the C and D chord positions. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it if you try it a few times.
Maybe this clip helps as well. If anyone else has some info to add please feel free to do so.
